How it started
A stretch of sand and a tin of blue paint
Stalida, or Stalis as the road signs also call it, is a village on a long, gentle beach on Crete's north coast, halfway between Hersonissos and Malia. Kallia grew up a few streets from the water and spent her childhood summers on exactly this stretch of sand, in the shade of the same palm trees that lean over our deck today.
When the old beachfront café on Agiou Ioanni street came up for rent, she took it with her family and a small team of friends. The first summer they had a handful of tables, a grill, a fridge full of Mythos, and one strong opinion: the walls would be painted in the blue and white stripes of the old Greek bathing cabins. The stripes have never come off.
The place
A boat inside the bar, a god at the door
Every corner of Ocean has a small story. The wooden boat under the big painted Ocean sign spent thirty years fishing out of the harbour at Sissi before a cousin offered it to us; we sanded it, painted it blue and white and filled it with cushions. The raffia and capiz-shell lamps that hang from the ceiling were strung up one winter, lamp by lamp, so the light stays soft even at midday.
The carved white sofas with striped cushions came from a Heraklion antiques dealer who could not believe anyone wanted them for a beach bar. The red starfish on the walls were a joke that stuck. And Poseidon, trident in hand, arrived on a truck one April morning and has sat at the entrance ever since, next to the sign that says exactly what we do: Bar, Restaurant, Fish, Meat.
The kitchen
Fish and meat, the honest way
The sign at the door does not over-promise, and neither does the kitchen. Fish comes from the boats that land in Stalida and Hersonissos in the early morning, and goes on the charcoal with nothing more than lemon, oregano and Cretan olive oil. The marinated octopus is a house favourite. Lamb kleftiko and beef stifado cook slowly in the oven the way Kallia's grandmother made them.
Because this is a beach, there are also the plates everyone wants after a swim: a proper club sandwich, a burger with bacon and melted cheese, spaghetti bolognese for the kids and the grown-ups who order it "for the kids". Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options are always on the menu, and every meal ends with watermelon and a small glass of raki, on the house.
The bar
From the first coffee to the last cocktail
The terrace opens at 10:00 and does not close until 01:00, so the day has a rhythm of its own: coffee and cold drinks brought to your sunbed while the beach is busy, long lunches in the shade, the light going golden behind the palms, then cocktails with the sound of the water in the dark.
The bar is where Ocean earned its reputation. The Soviet Sour, our signature, was invented one August night for a table of regulars who wanted "something sour, something strong, something new" and never left the menu. The Royal Flower, the fruit mojitos and the beer served in a frozen glass followed. Cocktails are the thing our guests mention most, and the bartenders take that seriously, bottle flips included.
The people
The team behind the stripes
Ocean is run by Kallia and her family, together with a team that comes back season after season, just like the guests. George greets you at the door and will happily tell you about Cretan life; Hassan and Aladin run the floor with the kind of calm that only years of busy Augusts can teach; and the kitchen and bar are led by people who have been here since the first summer. If you hear someone behind the bar shout malaka! at a colleague, do not worry: in Crete, between friends, it is almost a term of endearment.
Many of our guests are returning too. Families from the UK, the Netherlands and Scandinavia who first came for a quick lunch and now book the same sunbeds every year. We know the names, the drinks, and which of the kids has grown a head taller. That, more than anything, is what we are proud of.
We wanted a place where the day never has to end. You swim, you eat, the sun goes down, and somebody puts another cocktail in front of you.
